Collector reviews airport expansion project

Salem: District Collector Rohini R. Bhajibhakare reviewed the progress of the land acquisition works for the expansion of the airport at Kaamalapuram here on Wednesday.

The Salem airport was constructed about 25 years ago on 160 acres of land and has been lying idle for the last few years. Following a proposal to expand the airport, the authorities identified about 570 acres in Kaamalapuram, Pottiyapuram, Thumbipadi, and Sikkanapatti village panchayats for the same.The residents of these villages have been opposing the land acquisition as a majority of the lands identified are farm lands. Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, while addressing the MGR centenary celebrations in the city recently, hinted at expanding the airport.
