International passenger detained for gold smuggling

Vasco: Air intelligence unit of Goa customs detained an international passenger of Indian origin at Dabolim airport on Sunday for trying to smuggle gold. The accused was travelling from Dubai to Bengaluru via Goa.
Sources said 1.16 kg of gold bars covered in balloons were recovered from the washroom of Air India flight AI-994 during checking. The approximate value of the haul, seized under the provisions of Customs Act 1962, was pegged at Rs 32 lakhs.
The accused was detained on the basis of information received by customs sleuths. A few balloons identical to those covering the gold bars in the washroom were also recovered from his possession. Upon interrogation, the accused admitted that the bars belonged to him.
