$50,000, gold bars worth 91 lakh seized at airport

Bengaluru: Customs sleuths seized $50,000 (over Rs 32. 25 lakh) from the laptop bag of a Dubai-bound passenger at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in the early hours of Friday.
The currency haul comes after recovery of gold bars worth Rs 91 lakh concealed in the lavatory of an Indigo Airlines flight that landed at KIA on Thursday evening.
Sources with the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Bengaluru Customs said Friday morning's seizure took place after officers on duty noticed a passenger behaving suspiciously. He was later identified as Abdul Rafique from Kozhikode, who was waiting to board Emirates flight EK 0569 to Dubai.
Inspection of his laptop bag revealed a false bottom crafted in foam, inside which the $50,000 was hidden. Rafique was detained and is being questioned on the currency smuggling attempt, sources added.
An Indigo Airlines flight (6E 096) that landed at KIA from Dubai on Thursday evening contained two packets of gold bars weighing 3kg. Estimated to be worth Rs 91 lakh, the packets were hidden inside a cabinet below the wash basin in one of the restrooms of the flight. Following specific information, an AIU team boarded the flight after it landed at KIA and a thorough inspection unearthed the gold.
