7 flights cancelled, two diverted due to poor visibility

Patna: The poor visibility in Patna owing to smog led to cancellation of seven flights on Delhi-Patna route and two more flights were diverted from the city airport on Thursday.
Senior officials at Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport here said flight operations started from 11am against normal schedule from 7:30am.India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials at the airport observatory said the visibility was as low as 900 metres at around 9am and increased up to 1200m only around 11am when flight operations resumed. Owing to the short length of runway at the city airport, flights are allowed to operate only when the minimum visibility is 1200 metres.
"Four flights of IndiGo, two of GoAir and another of Air India — all on Delhi-Patna route — had to be cancelled. One of the runways at Delhi airport has also been closed owing to poor visibility. Moreover, one flight of SpiceJet on Mumbai-Patna route and another on Delhi-Patna route were diverted to Kolkata and Ranchi respectively in the morning hours," said an air traffic control (ATC) official at Patna airport.
