Cial hopeful of crossing the 1-crore passenger milestone

Kochi: Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) has set sights on the magic number of one crore passengers this financial year, as it has already witnessed a10% increase in the number of passengers using the airport this summer, compared to last year. Last summer, 51.63 lakh passengers used the airport and this summer, the number has increased to 56.81lakh.
The hike in passenger traffic this summer schedule (April-October) can be attributed to the increase in passenger movement in the domestic sector, which has seen a growth of 19.74%.
"One crore passenger movement is a significant milestone for any airport and we have been upgrading our facilities to deal with the increase in the passenger traffic. Last year, Cial had missed the milestone with a total of 89.41 lakh passengers using both international and domestic terminal," said the Cial spokesperson. He attributed the growth in domestic passenger traffic to tourism. Cial expects the passenger traffic in both the domestic and the international sector to increase further during Christmas and New Year this year.
Though there has been a significant increase in the number of passengers at the domestic sector, the growth in passenger traffic is only marginal at the international sector, with this summer schedule only witnessing an increase of 2.87%. Last year, the passenger traffic in the international sector only recorded an increase of the 7.69%, compared to the previous year.
