Flyer carrying $12,100 stashed inside gadgets intercepted

Kolkata: The air intelligence wing of the Customs department and CISF officials on Friday night intercepted a person at the airport when he was trying to smuggle foreign currency inside a power bank, a mobile charger and a calculator. The interception came close on the heels of the arrest of two persons who were carrying foreign currency in an adapter.
According to sources, CISF officials found something unusual about a power bank when they were checking hand baggages of passengers. As they started checking the power bank, it opened suddenly. There were bundles of US dollars rolled and folded inside the power bank. Officials eventually asked the passenger to take out all belongings from the hand baggage. A charger of the mobile phone and a calculator were also opened and foreign currency tumbled out of them. A total of $12,100 was found hidden inside the gadgets.
During interrogation, it was found that the passenger, identified as Sarfaraz Mohammad, 35, a resident of Khidderpore, was flying to Dhaka. According to cops, he has a record of carrying goods illegally. "What surprises us is the new modus operandi in smuggling. People are using the cavity inside electronic gadgets to carry valuables or money," said a Customs official.
