Surat ATC tower will not be decommissioned: AAI

Surat: Following the opposition from the activists against the setting up of remote ATC tower for Surat Airport at Ahmedabad, the Airports Authority of India has clarified that the pilot project is more of a technology demonstration for future and that there is no such decision that the tower at Surat or any other airport decided for the remote tower will be de-commissioned and not used for operations.
In an email reply to one of the member of We Work for a Working Airport at Surat (WWWAS), AAI chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra said that the AAI was inviting express of interest (EoI) for remote ATC tower and this project is a pilot project for allowing bigger airports like Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and even Surat to provide air traffic control facilities from a remote location.
At present, this is only an EoI and that the tender will be floated after freezing the technology received in the EoI from the prospective bidders. The remote tower planned at Ahmedabad will not only provide remote tower capabilities, but will also serve as contingency tower to the existing tower at Ahmedabad. The actual airports, to which, Ahmedabad remote tower will cater to or even the actual airport, will be decided in the due course.
The remote airport tower will be decided based on the size of the operation of airport, stated AAI chairman.
