Airlines to make special announcement during Armed Forces week, seek contribution for soldiers' welfare fund

New Delhi: Patriotism will be in the air this week.
In a first, Indian airlines will make a special announcement thanking the brave soldiers for protecting the country's borders and its citizens as India celebrates the "Armed Forces week" from December 1-7. Flyers will also be requested to contribute to the family of martyred soldiers or soldiers disabled in war or operations. December 7 is also the Armed Forces Flag Day.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had in his recent mann ki baat spoken about the Defence Ministry's plan for armed forces week during which it will "reach out to the people of the country to disseminate information about our armed forces... This is also an occasion to collect funds for the welfare of the jawans.... This amount is spent through the Sainik Kalyan Board on the dependents of those who lost their lives and also for those who got injured during wars, for their rehabilitation."
After the PM's message, the aviation authorities also swung into action. Directorate General of Civil Aviation joint chief Lalit Gupta wrote to all Indian airlines, saying: "In light of contributions made by Indian soldiers towards defence of our country, it is urged that in-flight announcement be made from December 1 to 7, requesting air travellers to volunteer for 'Armed Forces Flag Day Fund'. This fund is dedicated for rehabilitation and welfare of war widows, children of martyrs and disabled soldiers. The announcement may be made either before push back or after arrival of the aircraft." Gupta sent a draft of this announcement in his mail.
