Airport becomes hub of rescue efforts

Thiruvananthapuram: The technical area of the Thiruvananthapuram airport became the centre of rescue activities on Friday.

Minister for Tourism and Cooperation Kadakampally Surendran, who supervised the rescue operations here, titled Operation Synergy, went aboard one of the helicopters engaged in rescue operations off the coast of Thiruvananthapuram. Four aircraft of the Indian Air Force and seven vessels of the Navy were involved in the rescue operations here. The Coast Guard also had pressed into service two rescue vessels and helicopters.

By evening, the Navy had spotted 38 of the fishing boats that had gone missing from the district’s coastal areas. Rescue kits and food were supplied to the people in these boats until they were rescued. A special control room was opened in the technical area to coordinate the rescue activities and to ensure the health of those who were rescued.
