Man hides gold in bag metal strip; held at IGI airport by CISF

New Delhi: An Indian man bound for Bangkok was today apprehended at the Delhi international airport for allegedly trying to smuggle out gold worth Rs 45 lakh by concealing it in a metal strip on his baggage, the CISF said.

On-duty Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel early today intercepted Abdul Nizar, 27, at the Indira Gandhi International Airport when he was undergoing security checks.

During the X-ray scanning of his bag, a CISF official detected suspicious images and called him for a detailed frisking, it said.

"A 1.5-kg gold strip was fixed on the metal border of the bag and was cleverly coated with mercury. This was done to avoid detection by authorities. About 3 kg of saffron was also recovered from the same bag," a CISF spokesperson said.
