Odisha airport ups ante against birds

Bhubaneswar: To check bird menace and ensure passenger safety, authorities at Biju Patnaik International Airport have decided to procure a machine to drive them away from the operational area.
The airport being close to residential areas, agricultural lands and residential houses, it tends to attract birds. Although the airport and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) have taken several measures to check bird menace, they are yet to bear fruits.
Airport officials said they have floated atender to procure the vehicle called Bird Hazard Control Vehicle. The vehicle will be mounted with a siren which will emit a sound that will irritate the birds and help to drive them away.
Some of the birds which can cause damage to aircraft are the Black Kites, Shikra, Lapwing, Barn Swallow, Asian Pied Starling, Common Myna, Indian Nightjar and Barn Owl.
"Since the airport is built in a huge area, human intervention to drive the birds away is not possible. The vehicle has been designed in such a way that it can venture into every nook and cranny of the airport's operational areas," airport director Suresh Chandra Hota said.
