AAI seeks inquiry into breaking of glass panels at airport

Chennai: Authorities of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in Delhi have sought a detailed inquiry yet again into the recent incidents of glass panels breaking at the Chennai airport.

On Tuesday, a glass panel crashed in the security hold area of the airport around 11.30 p.m.

Since there were no passengers or staff in the area, no one was injured.

A few days ago, a bolt from a speeding car’s tyre broke the glass panels of the domestic terminal.

“After media reports emerged, the authorities in Delhi wanted to know why such incidents continue to occur. We will send them a report with the total number of incidents so far,” an official said.

Ever since the new domestic and international terminals of Chennai airport were inaugurated in 2013, there have been at least 40 incidents of glass panels breaking.

Over 22,000 glass panels from Saint Gobain have been used in the two terminals of the Chennai airport.
