Chinese man arrested for smuggling gold worth Rs 92 lakh at airport

The Custom officials at the Delhi airport arrested a Chinese man for allegedly trying to smuggle gold worth Rs 92 lakh in to the country, officials said on Sunday.

According to a statement issued by the Customs, the accused was intercepted upon his arrival from Hong Kong on Wednesday. "A detailed personal search of the passenger resulted in the recovery of three gold bars, weighing three kilograms, concealed inside specially designed pockets of the jeans worn by him," the statement said. "The gold bars, valued at Rs 91.88 lakh, have been seized by the officials at the airport," it said.

A similar incident was reported earlier in the month, when four Chinese men were arrested by the Customs for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country 10 kilograms of gold at the airport. The accused were intercepted by the Customs officials after their arrival from Taiwan via Hong Kong on February 10. The gold bars, valued at little over Rs 3 crore, were seized and the Chinese men were arrested.
