Philippines company picked from 3 to build Mopa airport

Panaji: GMR Goa International Airport Limited (GGIAL), the special purpose vehicle (SPV) that will develop the greenfield airport at Mopa, has selected Megawide Construction Corporation of the Philippines to construct it.
Work is expected to begin in the first week of March and will comprise site preparation, construction of the terminal building, air traffic controller (ATC) tower, airside and landside infrastructure and other associated tasks.
Megawide was selected from among Larson and Toubro (L&T) of India and Linak of Turkey as it was the lowest bidder, a senior officer said.
In June last year, when GGIAL had invited tenders from global contractors for engineering and construction of the new airport and procurement processes, all three companies had qualified for the sub-contract. The SPV had subsequently forwarded the names of the firms to the Union ministry of home affairs, which accorded security clearance to them in the second week of February.
GGIAL and the Union ministry of civil aviation had on March 31 last year, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Delhi for necessary support from the Centre to develop the international airport. The MoU is part of the concession agreement signed between the state government and GGIAL on November 8, 2016.
As per the concession agreement, GGIAL will have the right to operate the business for 40 years, extendable by another 20 years.
