Youth held with golden blades at Madurai airport

Madurai: The officials of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs Department seized around 250 grams of 24-carat gold, concealed as shaving blades and rings used in caps, from a passenger, M. Abudhahir (38) of Chennai, here on Monday evening.

Acting on specific intelligence input, a team of AIU officials, led by Assistant Commissioner A. Venkadesh Babu, intercepted Abudhahir, who flew down from Dubai by a Spicejet flight.

“He had concealed one golden blade in every pack, usually containing 10 stainless steel blades. The golden blades had been given an aluminium coating,” Dr. Babu said.

Besides, he had carried six caps. Each cap had six golden rings holding the air holes. “They too had been given an aluminium coating,” the officer said.
