Days after Indigo fiasco, Twinkle takes a jab at mosquito menace

Twinkle Khanna’s acerbic wit has found a new target. On Friday afternoon, the actorproducer-columnist took a shot at the growing menace of mosquitoes inside flights, with her tongue firmly in cheek.

“Airlines taking off from Mumbai-Instead of the life vest could you please put a tube of Odomos under the seat-Killed 7 mosquitoes before buckling in this morning-Odds of dying due to dengue may be higher than drowning:)” she tweeted, presumably after boarding a flight from the Mumbai airport. She did not name any airline.
The tweet instantly went viral; it had 435 re-tweets and 4,433 likes by Saturday evening.
Actor Sophie Chaudhry tweeted that she, too, suffered through a mosquito menace on a recent Delhi. She said the airline brought in a fly-swatter resembling a tennis racquet, but that was barely effective. “As soon as the racquet was taken off the plane, the blood suckers came out again! Urgh!” she tweeted.
Khanna’s tweet came on the heels of two incidents that have sparked a debate over airlines’ inability to contain the mosquito menace in flights. On April 9, a Lucknow-based vascular surgeon, Dr Saurav Rai, was de-boarded by Indigo after he allegedly complained of mosquitoes in the plane and asked for a repellent cream or spray. Indigo denied Dr Rai’s charge, claiming that he used the word “hijack” and terrorised passengers. A day later, a video showing many Jet Airways passengers swatting mosquitoes at the Lucknow airport did the rounds of social media.
Sudhakara Reddy, national president of the Air Passengers Association of India, said as per the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s regulations, airlines have to regularly fumigate flights to keep out mosquitoes and insects. “Perhaps, it should make this mandatory for airlines in light of recent incidents.”
