In two separate incidents, the customs department recovered gold worth Rs 61.94 lakh from the Mumbai International Airport on Wednesday. While gold worth Rs 33.22 lakh was seized from the toilet of an Air India aircraft, gold jewellery valued at Rs 28.72 was found during a personal search on a foreign national who had arrived on an Air Arabia flight from Cairo via Sharjah.
In the first instance, officers of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs department were carrying out search operation on board Air India flight AI 946 based on specific intelligence. During the search on the flight, which arrived from Abu Dhabi around 1:35 am, the team recovered 10 gold bars marked “MWG UAE”, hidden behind the mirror installed in the toilet of the aircraft. The bars, weighing 1167 gram, were valued at Rs 33.22 lakh.
“The gold bars were found in the toilet on the rear side of the aircraft. They were neatly wrapped in cream coloured adhesive tape,” said a senior Customs official. This is the second such seizure from the same Air India aircraft in last five days. On April 14, the AIU team had recovered gold worth Rs 1.32 crore from the cushion of seat 8A of the Air India aircraft.
In the second incident on Wednesday, AIU officials seized gold jewellery weighing 1.09 kg and valued at Rs 28.72 lakh from a foreign national Dafalla Hamadelneil, who arrived from Cairo via Sharjah on an Air Arabia flight. The gold was recovered from the front pocket of his jeans during a search.
