Tripura CM Mulling to Upgrade Agartala Airport as an International Airport

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has sought support of the central government for improving the quality and quantity of flights, introducing charter flight service, cargo carriers along with ground infrastructure like cold storage, night landing facilities in the state.

Mr Deb said on Wednesday that he has presented a 23 point vision of his government in the maiden meeting of NITI Forum yesterday and requested the minister of Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and Minister for DoNER Dr Jitendra Singh to extend full support for taking off the state’s economy.

“Besides, making Agartala airport as an international one, the state government wants to develop it as a hub for the travelers of Dhaka, Syllet and Chittagong of Bangladesh, Taiwan, Hongkong, Bangkok and other South East Asian countries,” he stated.

“There is a need to improve cargo handling capacity in Agartala airport to support the growing food processing industry, value addition of bamboo, horticultural produces and tourism industry in Tripura along with development of workforces,” Deb pointed out.

He demanded to install Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) and Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) to facilitate the movement of mobile data routed through Agartala, as the central government dedicated 3rd international internet gateway after Chennai and Mumbai here in 2016 extending 10 Gbps internet bandwidth from Coxbazar of Bangladesh.

At present it is catering only international internet traffic of Tripura as well as of other Northeastern states. To make this bandwidth available for domestic internet traffic installation of GPRS node is essential; Mr Deb mentioned seeking time bound action from the Centre to make the internet gateway in full use.

The ongoing Asian highway, which would be connecting Phuentsholing in Bhutan to Indo-Bangladesh border at Changrabandha in Cooch Behar of West Bengal via Dooars shall further boost trade in South East Asian countries when connects Tripura under Bangladesh Bhutan India Nepal (BBIN) network, Mr Deb apprised.
