Air India will phase out its last remaining dual-landing-bogey A320-200s by the end of this year. Air India inherited the aircraft from Indian Airlines as part of their merger in 2011.
"Most of the time these planes are on a stand-by mode and they perform one or two schedule flights in a day," an official told India's PTI news agency.
According to the ch-aviation fleets module, three of the aircraft are currently active - VT-ESE (msn 431), VT-ESF (msn 432), and VT-ESL (msn 499).
The configuration was due to the fact that many airports served by Indian Airlines at the time did not have suitable runways and taxiways that were not of optimal quality. As such, to better distribute loading and ease the strain on the aircraft's landing gear, twins were ordered.
