Dead birds delay landings

Calcutta: Two aircraft had to abort landing in the city within one-and-a-half hours after dead birds were found on the main runway on Sunday morning.

Airport officials said a GoAir flight from Delhi was about to land at 7.35am when the pilot told the air traffic control that he had spotted a dead bird on the runway. The pilot was asked to make a go-around and the flight finally landed at 7.50am.

The pilot of an Air India flight spotted another dead bird while he was taxing out after landing at 9am.
The pilot of a cargo aircraft of Blue Dart, which was about to land at 9.01am, was asked to make a go-around. The flight finally landed at 9.15am.

Airport officials said both birds might have died after being hit by the thrust of aircraft engines.
