'Our kids will pay for airline's nonchalance'

For Nitin Bavariya and Paresh Jediya of Rajkot, Friday began on a note of enthusiasm. The fathers were taking their 15-year-old sons to Pune to play in qualifying matches for admission to Pune Football Club. However, by the time the day ended, they were angry and exhausted, thanks to a delayed flight. Instead of reaching Pune by 9.30 pm, they landed at 2 am. The fathers were worried that the stress of uncertainty over the flight as well as journeying all day—they had started from home at noon—would affect the boys’ performance and even dash their long-cherished dreams. SpiceJet flight SG 523 from Ahmedabad to Pune was scheduled to take off at 7.10 pm on Friday.

However, it took off at 11.30 pm, supposedly due to air traffic congestion. What irked the passengers the most was the airline’s failure to give them a clear picture of the extent of delay in the evening itself. Bavariya and Jediya had set out from Rajkot at noon with their sons. Bavariya said, “We booked the evening flight so that the boys could get enough time to rest and be on the field with full energy on Saturday. The airline did not tell us in the evening that the flight would take off only after 11 pm. We eventually reached around 2 am.”
