Swadeshi lobby against AI sale

New Delhi: The RSS-affiliated Swadeshi Jagran Manch will be submitting a report advising the government to stop the sale of Air India and instead consider raising resources for the ailing carrier through a combination of IPO and asset sales.

"We will be submitting the report within a fortnight and feel that as the airline has brought down its cash losses considerably, the favours the government would have given to private bidders by way of paring the debt etc, can actually help in reviving the airline," said Ashwini Mahajan, national co-convenor of the influential SJM.

The government on its part, faced with tepid demand for the ailing state-run carrier on the one hand and rising opposition from within the BJP ranks is believed to be having second thoughts to selling off control in the "Maharaja". The government has sought bids for the sale of 76 per cent stake in the airline.
Mahajan, who heads a five-member panel preparing the report on the matter and is believed to have met civil aviation minister Suresh Prabhu, told The Telegraph "We have always opposed the concept of strategic disinvestment ... we have not opposed disinvestment, but strategic disinvestment we opposed earlier during the last BJP led Government, on principle we oppose today too."

Mahajan's remarks assume significance as RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has recently pointedly said Air India should not be sold to a foreign buyer.
