Mumbai: The Air Intelligence Unit of Mumbai Customs on Saturday arrested three Taiwanese nationals including a woman at the Mumbai airport for allegedly smuggling six kilogram of gold worth Rs 1.75 crore.
The accused people have been identified as Shu Hui Lai, 30, and her co-travellers Chuang Chun Chu, 30, and Tseng Chao-Wei, 33 — all holding a passport of the Republic of China Taiwan. Their interrogation revealed that they were to get $1,000 each as commission for the job.
According to the AIU officials, the accused had arrived at the city's international airport from Hong Kong on Saturday morning.
While they were passing the green channels, the officials got suspicious of Chu and Lai because of their body language, they said.
The officials said a search of both the passengers was conducted after which the officials recovered three kilogram of gold from each.
"The gold in the form of six gold bars weighing one kilogram each was concealed in two especially stitched cloth zipper pouches, with three pockets each. The duo had concealed the cloth pouch by tying it around their waist under their trousers. We then took them into custody and the gold bars with foreign markings were seized under the Customs Act," said an AIU official.
"On inquiring with the duo, they revealed that they had one more accomplice, Wei, who was supposed to deliver the gold to a foreigner in Mumbai and send the accused back to their country," he said.
