UAE Consulate in Kerala issues advisory over Nipah outbreak

The UAE Consulate of Kerala in Thiruvananthapuram has issued a warning on its official Twitter handle regarding the recent Nipah virus outbreak.

It reads: "Due to the outbreak of the rare Nipah virus in fruit bats in the southern Indian state of Kerala, the Consulate General of the United Arab Emirates in Kerala and South India advises its citizens to take precautionary measures and follow instructions issued by the concerned Indian authorities regarding their safety.
"Citizens can contact the consulate in the event of an emergency at 00919087777737 or the Foreign Ministry's call centre at 80044444 and register for the Tawajudi service."

While three members of a family at Perambara in Kozhikode died within weeks after what seemed to be common fever aggravated quickly, two more family members were being treated at the Medical College hospital and one of them has also tested positive.

A travel advisory was also issued by Bahrain.

"Due to the spread of the dangerous # NipahVirus in Kerala, South India, citizens are advised to be cautious, till situation is under control," a tweet from the consulate said.
