AAI plans better perimeter lights at Chennai airport to enhance security

Chennai: The Chennai airport is set to enhance perimeter security by improving the lighting along the walls of the campus to prevent intrusions. This will be the first step in the installation of the electronic perimeter intruder detection system (PIDS).
The new guidelines issued by Bureau of Civil Aviation Security says the lights should be installed so that they face the outside of the airport campus. The lights are also going to be improved as per the new policy. An AAI official said, “The lights should illuminate the area outside the wall so that intrusion attempts can be detected better by sentries in the watch towers. Now, the lights illuminate the walls and look into the airport campus. Under the current arrangement, intrusions can be noticed only after they happen.”
The work will begin by end of this month or from the next month. The process is on to identify a contractor.
The official also said the suggestion was put forward during a security and safety audit conducted prior to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) audit a couple of months ago. The officials who were part of the ICAO audit, too, had the same suggestion and there was a mention about the need to have modern electronic surveillance system for perimeter security.
