Airport mulls plan B for satellite terminal minus tunnel

Chennai: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is considering a backup plan for the proposed satellite terminal at Chennai airport in case the tunnel linking it to the main terminal building cannot be built in time.
At a review meeting, the AAI chairman told engineers to look at alternative ways to ferry passengers and baggage in buses to the main building from the satellite terminal that will be built in the space between the runways.
The move comes after it was found that the tunnel may take time to bore and the integrated terminal being built at the spot of the old domestic and international terminals may take four years to complete. AAI wants the satellite terminal also to be ready in four years or before to handle the rising passenger traffic, especially because of regional connectivity flights.
Officials said AAI wanted to keep an alternative plan ready if the tunnel cannot be readied in time. The tunnel is not included in the Rs 2,476crore phase 2 expansion which includes demolishing the old domestic and international terminals and building an integrated terminal. Only an interface or link for the tunnel with the integrated terminal has been included in the project.
“If the tunnel is not ready in time, the satellite terminal may be used for domestic arrivals. Passengers can pick up their bags and board shuttle buses which will drop them to the main arrival terminal. It may be a long drive but the terminal can be used for this purpose.”
