Airstrip fate hangs in balance

Daltonganj: The Chiyanki airstrip here is unlikely to be activated anytime soon as the process involves departmental land transfer and an approval from the finance department, director (operations) of state civil aviation department captain S.P. Sinha said on Monday.

"It involves lots of logistics. It is a time-consuming affair. Everything is in a very nascent stage," he told The Telegraph over phone from New Delhi.

BJP MP of Palamau V.D. Ram, who was on Monday counting the achievements of the Narendra Modi government during its four-year tenure, was asked by this newspaper about the fate of the airstrip.

Ram said the airstrip was located on the irrigation department land and a proposal was being readied under which the civil aviation department would have to pay Rs 12 crore to its irrigation counterpart to acquire the plot. However, the plan needs to be cleared by the state finance department. However, the MP said the airstrip would become operational by 2019.

Sinha said the Airports Authority of India would look into the finer details before air connectivity became a reality here.
