Choked Chennai airport hopes to park planes in Puducherry

Chennai: With plans for a second airport in the city not taking off, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is looking at the proposed expansion of Puducherry airport as an opportunity to park planes meant to operate from Chennai.
Officials said the proposal to expand the apron area, add parking bays for planes and extend the runway at Puducherry airport to make it ready for A320 type aircraft was mooted some time ago. If the airport is expanded by building a taxiway and a few parking bays, aircraft can be parked there at night and brought to Chennai for morning departures.
However, the plan is yet to get off the ground as the Tamil Nadu government has not shown interest in giving land. A parcel of land from Tamil Nadu will be needed to expand the airport of the Union territory.
Though Chennai airport has close to 70 to 80 parking bays for planes, the facility is not adequate. This has forced the AAI to look at smaller airports nearby like Puducherry, Salem and Vellore.
