HC notice to GMR over Rs 15,000 user fee for Hajis at airport

Hyderabad: The High Court on Thursday issued notices to the central government, GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI), asking them to explain why high user charges are being collected from Haj pilgrims flying to Saudi Arabia out of Hyderabad International Airport.
S M Saifullah, a Hyderabad-based advocate, in his plea, said that while international passengers flying from Hyderabad airport pay a user development fee (UDF) of Rs 1,700 (the highest among all Indian airports), the GMR-run airport has surpassed its own record, collecting a hefty Rs 15,000 per head from pilgrims.
Subjecting pilgrims to this kind of discrimination is unfair and unconstitutional, Saifullah said, pointing out that the Center's Haj policy for 2018- 2022 imposed 18% GST up on Haj pilgrims. This coupled with UDF has imposed a huge burden on Haj pilgrims.
