International cargo hub at Pune airport’s trans-shipment facility gains pace

Pune:  There’s finally some progress at Pune airport’s trans-shipment facility, which became operational from March 31.
“From today (Thursday), we are ready with our international cargo exports and we will be exporting cargo to Dubai on Air India flight. We will use the trans-shipment facility to transport cargo to other international destinations. Exporters may call 020-26684877/9823166983 for more information,” Suhas Jadhav, station manager of Air India in Pune, told TOI.
Sources in the Pune customs said that the service, which did not have any takers initially, was now generating interest. “We have learnt that Jet Airways will soon start international cargo exports through the trans-shipment facility,” an official said on condition of anonymity. Jet did not respond to queries sent by this reporter.
Senior customs officials added that trans-shipment facility had opened vast business opportunities. “This has opened opportunities for Pune-based exporters who may now clear air shipments bound for Europe, Africa and the US. It has also helped in overcoming limitations of export destinations due to limited number of outbound international flights from Pune,” Pune customs commissioner MVS Choudary said.
“Air India has been asked to take permission for transshipment facility immediately as they have the permission to start international cargo exports. The advantage with Air India is that they have connectivity with many international destinations,” a customs official pointed out.
