Madurai airport to get 7 more parking bays

Madurai: Travellers may soon be able to fly out of Madurai on early morning flights as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning to double the number of bays for night parking of aircraft at the airport. Seven more parking bays, including two helipads, are proposed. There are seven parking bays now, of which only six can be used at a time. Besides, a third aerobridge is coming up at the airport.
More parking bays will enable airlines to operate more flights during peak hours and also park planes at night for early morning departures. As parking bays are full in Chennai, AAI is looking at expanding parking bays at other airports.
As the number of flights is increasing gradually, the airport is finding it difficult to accommodate unscheduled flights during peak hours due to the limited parking facility. AAI has recently floated a tender for the expansion of the apron.
Madurai airport director V V Rao said, “The airport is busiest between 11.30am and 2.30pm as at least six flights land and take off. We find it difficult to provide permission for unscheduled flights during peak hours due to the limited parking bay facility. Once expansion is done more flights can be operated at short intervals,” he said.
