State-trafficking rackets at airports: SIT will investigate, Kerala govt tells HC

Kochi: State government on Thursday informed the Kerala High Court that a special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to probe the activities of the racket that allegedly trapped youths traveling on job visas to act drug traffickers.
An order for forming the SIT was issued by the state police chief on Tuesday considering the court’s observation that the case is serious in nature and any delay in conducting the investigation may affect the lives of the youths detained in Duhail Jail at Doha in Qatar and awaiting capital punishment, government informed.
The SIT will be headed by Kozhikode city police chief Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar under the direct supervision of administration IG P Vijayan, the court was told. A copy of the state police chief’s order was produced before the court. Investigation will be conducted by a 12-member team under Kaliraj and includes Kasaragod DySP, circle inspectors of Angamaly, Kondotty, and Chengannur, one sub inspector, five assistant sub inspectors, and two civil police officers.
As per the state police chief’s order, FIR have been registered at Chengannur and Angamaly police stations. Offences alleged in the FIR includes exploitation of a trafficked person, criminal breach of trust, cheating, and dealing in drugs.
