The irony of cheap flights

Air India Express and Indigo are among the top five most affordable airlines in the world, according to a Global Flight Pricing ranking report by Melbourne-based travel company Rome2rio. The report is based on the average price per kilometre. Air India Express and Indigo were ranked at No 2 and No 5 among 200 carriers, with an average price of $0.07 and $0.10 per km respectively. Jet Airways and Air India were at No 12 and No 13, with an average price of $0.10 per km. Twenty-four of the list’s top 30 airlines are based in Asia, and include Malaysia-based AirAsia X at No 1.

Although four Indian airlines feature on the list, in contrast to other countries, India’s global passenger traffic is dominated by foreign carriers: Foreign airlines had a 61.2 percent share of passenger traffic to and from India between October and December 2017. This is also because there are 89 foreign airlines compared to five Indian ones with global operations. Successive Indian governments have given flying rights to global carriers while restricting overseas operations for domestic ones.
