2 kg gold mixed with paste seized

Trichy: The customs air intelligent unit has busted a gold smuggling racket which tried to sneak in the yellow metal through the Trichy international airport in powder form by mixing it with an unidentified paste. Four passengers who arrived from Dubai by an Air India Express flight were arrested in this connection and about 2 kilograms of gold recovered.
Customs authorities said they grew suspicious of four passengers who arrived at the international airport from Dubai in the wee hours of Thursday. Though during the checking process, it came to light that gold had been concealed, they could not locate where the yellow metal was hidden. After intensive checking, it was revealed that the passengers — Nizam Mohidin, 35, Abdul Harris, 30, Mohammed Ashique, 33, and Mazhar Hussain,
29, all hailing from Chennai — carried the gold in the form of a powder mixed with a paste.
A door-frame metal detector and a hand metal detector are used by customs officials to check the passengers atthe customs security hold area at the airport terminal.
