Gold seized

Thiruvananthapuram: Customs officials at the international airport here seized 1.26 kg of gold, estimated at Rs. 40 lakh, from a passenger arriving on an Air India Express flight from Dubai early Sunday morning.

The sleuths, who had received intelligence, intercepted the passenger after they became suspicious, and recovered an abdominal belt with concealed gold from the accused.

The officials said the gold had been powdered, mixed with protein powder and glue, and this paste was slipped inside a long polythene cover and worn inside a medium-sized abdominal belt. The belt, which weighed 2.1 kg, was then worn inside innerwear by the accused, Ali of Kollam. The passenger was arrested.
