More domestic carriers may operate from Kannur airport

Thiruvananthapuram: Decks are getting cleared for more domestic flight operations from the upcoming Kannur international airport with the Centre agreeing to lift the three-year monopoly granted in seven sectors for two domestic carriers under the ‘Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik’ (UDAN) scheme.

The Civil Aviation Ministry has also asked the State to lower the Value Added Tax (VAT) on Aviation Turbine Oil (ATF) to 1% for all domestic carriers operating in the domestic sector to the fourth international airport of the State on the lines for those operating under UDAN regional connectivity scheme.

The State and the Kannur International Airport Limited (KIAL), which is to operate the airport after it is commissioned later this year, are in favour of the modified UDAN scheme that will allow all domestic carriers to operate from Kannur airport.
