Ranchi: New-generation travellers are fuelling growth of air traffic at Ranchi's Birsa Munda airport. A report available with Ranchi airport said 47,066 domestic passengers used the airport in October 2013 as against 36,878 passengers in October 2012.
An analysis of data collected by the airport authorities shows that youngsters make up a vast majority of the fliers. The traditional fliers, which includes xzpoliticians, bureaucrats, industrialists and people going outside for treatment, however continue to bankroll the airlines operating from Ranchi. "There has been a steady increase in the number of fliers using the airport since April 2013," said airport director Raju Raghvendra Kumar. In early 2013, Jharkhand government had announced a cut in taxes on aviation turbine fuel, which led to a decline in air fare for flights operating from Ranchi. This is one of the main reasons behind the rise in passengers' traffic. Since then, the airport has seen around 15% growth in the number of passengers, said Kumar.
