Apart from the cleanest city in India, Mysuru is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. But for long, there has been a huge grouse: the south-western city has poor air connectivity and it looks like things will remain the same for some time at least. Union civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapati Raju did a lot of plainspeak on Thursday during the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha when Chamrajnagar MP R Dhruvnarayana wanted to know when the airport in Mysore would become operational. The minister said, "Mysore is a beautiful city. On the one side of the Mysore airport, you have the National Highway and on the other side, you have the railway line. So theexpansion is tough under present conditions. Airlines can't smoothly land and take off under such consitions. So, this is one big problem. Globally, the size of aircraft is growing and the number of passengers too are also growing. It is an important city. So, we have been trying to get people to understand this and find solutions to it."
He was equally frank with Congress MP Rajiv Satav who suggested that Air India should provide connectivity to Nanded, a sacred pilgrimage to the Sikhs. Raju said, "The government can talk to the airlines, but we can't compel them. I am happy to inform the House that Air India is fnally coming out of losses and the gov'ts non-interference is a very big reason."
