Kalyan's Nevali base could be the alternative to Navi Mumbai airport site

Thane: Questions are once again being raised about the viability of the proposed international airport at Navi Mumbai, with CIDOC officials stating that the delay in decision-making has raised the projects costs to a new high of Rs 14,500 crore.
The corporation's internal paper said the new cost estimate is 305 per cent increase as compared to the earlier projected cost of Rs 4,766 crore, raising doubts about the take-off of this project.
Environmental groups have been opposing the project at Navi Mumbai as it would involve merciless chopping down of mangroves and reclaiming marshy plots. Moreover, with the project affected people demanding a higher compensation, the costs have assumed unviable status.
