Cargo terminal to boost trade activities from April

Ranchi: Export of horticulture produces will get the much-needed boost from April as a terminal dedicated solely for cargo is likely to become operational by the end of the month. The ‘common user domestic cargo terminal’ is being developed by Airport Authority of India, which is developing similar infrastructure at other small and medium airports also.

The cargo terminal would fill the gap in export infrastructure, especially for quick transport of perishable goods and other products with short shelf life like vegetables. Jharkhand produces more than four million tonnes of vegetables and fruits annually, however, accessibility to markets in the absence of poor connectivity to such common places splashed across the country is the major hindrance for the State’s farmers.

“The Airport Authority of India is working continuously to harness cargo potential and for that it identified Ranchi among the list of 34 small and medium airports to develop common user domestic cargo terminal. The terminal at Birsa Munda Airport will become operational by April end. Some civil and electrical works are under progress at the terminal which will be complete by March,” said Airport Director, Anil Vikram at an ‘Outreach Workshop’ organised by Organic Farming Association of Jharkhand jointly with Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) at Ranchi.
