Mumbai: The air traffic controller shortage at Juhu airport has reached such a critical level that the airport, which used to be open from sunrise to sunset, has begun shutting down at 5pm.
The 90-minute early closure, enforced by controllers from last Saturday, will hit oil and gas production at Bombay High and also affect aircraft charter operators and private aircraft owners. If the controller shortage continues, the airport may stay open only from sunrise to 3pm on certain days, hitting oil and gas production significantly.

"This (the shortage) puts severe pressure on the system, as the ATCOs are very fatigued mentally and physically, with the adverse working conditions adding to the stress,'' said a letter sent on March 23 to the airport director by J G Rakshikar, additional general manager, air traffic control-in-charge, Juhu airport, alluding to the air safety risks brought on by the shortage.
