Chennai: Flying overseas could be cheaper in the days to come, thanks to the country's first Civil Aviation Policy cleared by the Cabinet on Wednesday.
The policy allows new domestic carriers like Air Asia and Vistara to fly abroad without having to fulfill the 5/20 rule, which the government has just scrapped. Until now, all domestic carriers had to finish the mandated five years of domestic operations to be eligible to fly outside India. The scrapping of the 5 year norm has been opposed by older carriers like Jet Airways and Spice Jet that complied with the norm to gain international route access.
"If there are more players, fares will get competitive and there will be a wider choice for customers," Vivek Choudhary, CFO, Air Costa told Express. He, however, declined to be specific by how much air fares will be cheaper.
