Air India Express expands fleet, explores new routes

Kochi:  Air India Express (AIE), the Kochi-headquartered low-cost arm of Air India, has increased its fleet strength by adding three Boeing B737-800 NG aircraft, and is all set to further expand by including three more aircraft by year-end.

The company expects to tap the potential of the growing middle class segment, mainly comprising the working class, by increasing the fleet size and exploring new destinations. The customer base of AIE rose to 2.8 million in 2015-16 from 2.6 million in 2014-15.

Speaking to ‘Express,’ airline officials said, “we would be the first major airline to commence operation from the Kannur International Airport Limited (KIAL), and preparations are currently on to commence service to various Middle East destinations as soon as the KIAL becomes operational. We will soon enhance our fleet strength from 20 to 23 by adding three more B737-800 NG aircraft.”

Three leased aircraft have already joined the AIE fleet and begun operation. In addition to the existing destinations, the airline has commenced a new service to Ras Al Khaimah from Kozhikode, with a frequency of four flights per week.

The other new services are daily flights between Mumbai-Dubai (vice versa) and Mumbai -Sharjah (vice versa) from April 2016, and Delhi-Dubai (vice versa) and Delhi-Abu Dhabi (vice versa) from May 2016. Meanwhile, frequency of the Dubai-Kozhikode service has been doubled from one to two daily flights from June 2016.
