If all goes well, regular BSc students can learn aircraft maintenance

If everything goes well, regular BSc students—not specifically enrolled in aeronautics or aviation engineering courses—will soon be able to pick aircraft maintenance as one of their subjects in the country.
A committee of experts constituted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to look into the possibility of designing curricular structure for a bachelor-level degree programme in aeronautics has prepared a draft syllabus which has been sent to all universities for their comments and objections.
In a notice to the universities, UGC Secretary Jaspal S Sandhu says that the "idea was to address the shortage of skilled manpower in the burgeoning sector of aeronautics that requires techno-scientific expertise for successful operation."
Consultations and deliberations in the meetings by the experts revealed that the area of aircraft maintenance in the identified sector (aeronautics) is particularly affected by shortage of skilled human resources.
"Thus, it merits urgent attention of institutions of higher education, which is why the committee decided to design the template of syllabus for a BSc Honours (Aircraft Maintenance) as a way of encouraging universities to come forward and offer this programme under the choice-based credit system (CBCS) introduced by UGC," Sandhu said.
"There is a national need and it is a welcome. That said, they should not hurry into anything and compromise on the quality. Given that there is no aerospace degree programme in the country (there are engineering courses) this is better suited than a direct masters programme, which was also thought of earlier.," former Bangalore University Vice-Chancellor MS Thimmappa said.
From aircraft structure and associated systems to flight navigation and from rotorcraft (helicopters) to gas turbine engine, the course will see over 17 chapters or sub-subjects that students will learn.
