Gaya international airport closed till Nov 23

The Gaya airport will remain closed from Tuesday till November 23 to facilitate repair and recarpeting of the runway. Thereafter, it will be open for landing and take-off purposes only for nine hours beginning 6 in the morning, said Gaya airport director Dilip Kumar.
The uneven surface and ditches at several points on the runway had made landing and take-off of aircraft risky. On Saturday, too, the airport had to be closed for more than three hours to repair the runway as its sizeable portion developed cracks. Sources say minor repair work had to be done several times in the past as the runway suffered damages during take-off.
As per the guidelines, major repair and recarpeting of the runway should be done every 10 years. The Gaya airport runway was commissioned in 2000 and, as such, it was long overdue.
“The 2286-metre-long runway is to repaired and re-carpeted at an estimated cost of Rs20 crore. In order to save time, pre-job formalities like installation of a hot-mix plant and stock of material to be used in the process has already been done. No compromise with quality of material and work would be made,” said the airport director.
