Domestic passenger traffic at the Aurangabad airport has shown a significant drop, but cargo movement went considerably in 2015-16 as against the previous fiscal figures.

The number of passenger count has reduced from 4.24 lakh to 2.99 lakh — nearly 29.5%. Aurangabad airport is the only facility that has witnessed a drop in terms of domestic passenger movement among other major airports in the state, the Economic Survey of Maharashtra for 2016-17 has revealed.

On the other hand, domestic cargo movement at Aurangabad airport has been increased to 1,406 tonnes in 2015-16 from 1,250 tonnes in 2014-15. The increase comes around 12.5%.

Aurangabad airport director Sharad Yeole said winding up of operations of one of the private airline has resulted in terms of drop in domestic passenger movement. "Earlier we used to have seven flights a day, which came down to five after one private airline shut its operations from Aurangabad airport," he said.

On the 12.5% increase in cargo movement, Yeole said facilitating the Common User Terminal for domestic cargo at Aurangabad airport has reflected in the rise.

The Aurangabad airport has domestic connectivity to Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad. Haj Flight also takes off from the airport every year. Besides Air India, a few private airlines operate flights from city airport. A group of private air charters has been engaged in cargo movement.
