Sit-in staged for jobs at airport

Kannur: Job aspirants from families relocated on takeover of their land for the Kannur International Airport coming up near Mattannur here staged a sit-in in front of the Collectorate here on Monday in protest against alleged violation of the assurance by the government that one member each from evicted families will be given jobs in the airport.

A group of irate youths from families of the evicted from land acquired for the airport held the protest after they found that they were called for an interview here in the morning being conducted by a private agency for ‘ground handling’ works on a contract for three years.

They said that this was a clear violation of the assurance given by the State government in 2008 that one member from each of the evicted families would be given employment by the Kannur International Airport Ltd. or allied institutions on the basis of the candidates’ qualifications.

K. Vishakh, convener of the Kannur Airport Employment Protection Committee, an action committee of job aspirants from the families, said that none of the job aspirants from the 173 families who had given land for the airport had been given job in the airport though KIAL had been recruiting people to various posts over the last three years.
