Foreign currencies seized from flyer at Trichy airport

Foreign currencies worth Rs 29 lakh was seized from Kuala Lumpur bound passengers at Trichy airport on Tuesday night.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) acted swiftly based on a tip off and carried out a baggage check on passengers who were to board an Air Asia fight to Kuala Lumpur.
Authorities found foreign currencies concealed in the bottom of the luggage stroller and seized them under the customs act of 1962. Enquiry was carried out with the passengers who were allegedly attempting to smuggle the currency to foreign countries.
The passengers have been identified as Mubarak Ali, 37, from Trichy and Abdul Vahab, 40, from Chennai.
Mubarak tore the bottom of his luggage bag to conceal foreign currencies worth Rs 16.5 lakh which include Saudi riyal and US dollars. He was also carrying Rs 3 lakh Indian in curency. Abdul Vahab had concealed foreign currencies worth Rs 12.80 lakh.
