Govt allots 1,025 ha land for new Rajkot airport

Chief minister Vijay Rupani has put the greenfield airport project in his hometown on fast track, with allotment of 1,025 hectare land to the Airport Authority of India (AAI) at Hirasar, about 15km from the city. The decision of land allotment was approved by the state cabinet on Thursday.
This has paved way for the first international airport in Saurashtra region. The government said in a statement that the decision would entail balanced, overall economic growth of Saurashtra. The proposed airport lands falls under three villages of Dosli-Ghuma, Garida and Lomakotadi.
AAI will develop the new world-class airport on build, operate and maintenance basis. The new airport was necessitated with a view to expand the existing Rajkot airport on 250-acre land for the city's greater connectivity, the state government stated.
"This is great news for Rajkot. The feasibility study was completed and it was positive. The other surveys are underway at the proposed site. Moreover, 97% of land needed (of the 250 acre) for the project is government land while rest is private land which needs to be acquired. Land owners have shown their willingness to give it for the project," said Vikrant Pandey, collector, Rajkot.
