Government seeks haj embarkation point at Karipur

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said that the state government would approach the Centre again to make Karipur airport a haj embarkation point for pilgrims from Kerala.
"The state government has taken all steps to develop Karipur International Airport and make it suitable for wide-bodied aircraft that are used to transport haj pilgrims," the chief minister told representatives of Muslim organisations in a meeting held here on Thursday.
The state government, he said, was ready to acquire the required land to develop the airport further. "The resistance from local people towards land acquisition has now diminished. The Union civil aviation ministry is also in favour of the development," he said.
Vijayan also blamed the previous government for its 'apathy' in initiating necessary measures for the airport's development, which he said led to the present scenario.
